FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 25, 2019 Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce Statement on End of Government Shutdown We are glad to hear that the federal government is being reopened temporarily. This is a good first step in ending the nation’s longest government shutdown in history. We thank our Congressional delegation for working to resolve this issue which has had a significant impact on our contractors, especially small businesses. Nevertheless, we want to ensure that history does not repeat itself. The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce will be pressing for legislation to put protections in place for federal contractors in order to mitigate the hardships of a government shutdown. Although federal workers will receive back pay, federal contractors are left holding the bag. It will take time for our members to recover from the shutdown and we hope agencies will make them whole. The disruption caused by federal government shutdowns – whether partial or total – threatens our national security and economy. We urge Congress and the President to break the unfortunate budget cycle of continuing resolutions and government shutdowns. The Montgomery County business community deserves better. ### Read the original press release here.
